ShahSevan Rug Fragment

3'11 x 3'3, South Caucasus or N.W. Iran, First half 19th Century

This lovely old fragment has an unusual soft color palette, a very loose floppy weave, details in what appears to be camel hair, and the really intriguing remains of an unusual central field design. The outer minor border of polychrome triangles is also uncommon. Though its area of origin in Northwestern Iran or possibly the Southern Caucasus is unclear, it certainly appears to have been woven well back in the 19th century.

The fragment has wear as shown, but no significant repair. A cut across the field, not into the borders, has been resewn as shown in the following detail.
