Sistan balisht with back, Iran, 19th century

Sistan Balisht

18” x 32”

There is a great deal of variation in quality among this group of pillow faces from Seistan. This example, which has its plainweave camel colored back intact, has the soft wool that is one of the factors that separates the superior examples. It has an uncommon design, with enough playfulness and variation to give energy to the drawing. Its rich colors feature a lovely aubergine and a deep green (looks bluish in some of the pictures).

It has a few knots of magenta silk (near the bite on the lower left edge) and three knots of what could be a synthetic orange. One bite out of the side, and a couple of small spots of wear, but basically in full pile complete with its back and original goat hair selvage wrapping.
